Neto Villalobos Brenes graduated with a degree in Sociology and later majored in Film Direction in Barcelona. He wrote, produced and directed his first feature film All About the Feathers, which premiered in Toronto and then San Sebastian. His second feature Helmet Heads was part of the Cannes Residence and also premiered in Toronto. He co-directed El Gran Líbano as part of the Directors’ Fortnight.

Note of intent
How far are we willing to go for love? How much is a grandmother willing to sacrifice to rescue her granddaughter? My perception of aging has changed as I see my loved ones grow old or die. I don’t like the idea of accepting that no matter how active someone is, the time comes when they become “irrelevant” or “useless”. After having directed two comedies, I found myself wanting to make something more dramatic, a movie that redeems those who feel like they don’t matter anymore.
Synopsis
In the near future in San Jose, part of the population lives in walled communities, hires armed security nannies, and trains their children in kid’s shooting ranges. A 65-year-old grandma wounds her hand trying to shatter the glass of the car in which she mistakenly locked her granddaughter. That one mistake will cause the child’s mother, who is part of the generation that lives in fear, to feel her mother is old and incapable of taking care of her child. She will be forbidden from seeing her granddaughter, and that will trigger a series of unfortunate events that will lead her to do things she never thought she would ever do. These things won’t be achievements precisely, but they will be her own personal way to show them the love for her granddaughter and that she is still of use.
Visual concept
The audiovisual treatment of this thriller is realistic, slow, deliberate and violent. I am interested in creating a sensation of anxiety through the controlled manipulation of information, atmosphere, and sound design. The film takes place in a near future that looks a lot like the present of any Central American city. The story is told completely through the grandmother’s point of view. The framing and rhythm of the film will portray the main character’s mood and change.

Alejo Crisóstomo founded Ceibita Films in Guatemala from where he produced/directed the feature films Fe and Padre. In 2014, produced Muñecas Rusas and the documentary El Codo del Diablo. Later from Chile, his third feature as producer/director, Nina and Laura, the TV series Immigrantes and La novia del desierto – Official Selection in Uncertain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival.
