Marcos, a withdrawn park ranger, sees the fragile balance achieved in his isolation collapse with the arrival of a couple of biologists investing strange bird deaths. Unfortunately, the desire and envy for normality represented by the couple awaken the monster he has been trying to control. His face, his legs and his arms don’t belong to him and as the desperation becomes incontrollable, he can only see one way out: mutilation.

El deseo y la envidia por la normalidad que la pareja representa despiertan lentamente al monstruo que él intentaba controlar: su cara, sus piernas y sus brazos no le pertenecen y a medida que la desesperación se hace incontrolable, la única salida que encuentra es la mutilación.

Hélas, le désir et l’envie de normalité représentée par le couple réveille le monstre qu’il tentait de contrôler. Son visage, ses jambes et ses bras lui échappent et tandis que le désespoir devient incontrôlable, il ne voit qu’une issue: la mutilation.
It took but a stroke of fate to make the girl I was then to not show up at that meeting with war. Other girls did go to it, and ended up by joining the guerrilla. This story reemerges after all these years and, now, I am inescapably pursuing it. In 2016, I found out that, after the signing of the peace treaty with the Colombian government, 8.000 guerrilla members, of which 3.500 were women. I thought to myself: “one of those guerrilla women could have been me.” Months later, I found myself deeply immersed in the jungle, searching for those women whose destiny had been, indeed, to join the guerrilla. I lived there with many guerrilla women. In 2017, these women surrender their arms and reenter civil life. They begin to look for their families and children. The hardest of all is knowing that civil society doesn’t want to take these female ex-combatants back in.
Il n'a fallu qu'un coup du sort pour que la fille que j'étais ne se présente pas à cette rencontre avec la guerre. D'autres filles s'y sont rendues et ont fini par rejoindre la guérilla. Cette histoire réapparaît après toutes ces années et, maintenant, je la poursuis inévitablement. En 2016, j'ai découvert qu'après la signature du traité de paix avec le gouvernement colombien, des 8000 membres de la guérilla, 3500 étaient des femmes. Je me suis dit: «une de ces femmes de la guérilla aurait pu être moi.» Des mois plus tard, je me suis retrouvée profondément immergée dans la jungle, à la recherche de ces femmes dont le destin était, en effet, de rejoindre la guérilla. J'y ai vécu avec beaucoup de femmes guérilleras. En 2017, ces femmes rendent leurs armes et réintègrent la vie civile. Elles se mettent à chercher leurs familles et leurs enfants. Le plus difficile est de savoir que la société civile ne veut pas accepter ces ex-combattantes.
When taking a look at the map of America, X Quinientos, a small village in the Yucatán state, in Mexico, appears just in the middle of the continent. From this imaginary point of reference, the movie tells the story of characters who live in radically different contexts, but who are related to each other due to their singular relationship with death and to their need of changing in order not to be consumed by their mourning.
Alex, an afro-Colombian teenager, who lives in Buenaventura, the most important yet most dangerous port in Colombia, has to create and imaginary version of his life as a stowaway in the North in order to justify the death of his brother and travelling companion. David, a Mazahua youngster who migrates from his town to Mexico City because he is incapable of dealing with his father’s death, realizes that the only way to face the discrimination indigenous people are subject to in the F.D. is by adopting a Punk personality as a protective armor. Aurora, a mature woman of a Filipino origin who has lived in Montreal for 35 years, finds herself in the obligation of taking care of her teen grandchild, who comes to live with her after the death of her daughter. Aurora has to then try to adapt her life in the city to the image that Peter has of North America, image which was created from the stories in her letters, distorted by the longing and the distance, now incompatible with her current life.
The stories of Alex, David and Aurora get close and engage in a dialogue in which they never come across each other. This group of stories explores three different ways in which as inhabitants of America we create a self-representation of ourselves to protect us from death, and to get closer to how we think the others want to see us. The invisible conversation of desire and mourning with which people from America relate to each other, is the underlying theme and unifying thread of X Quinientos.
Al mirar el mapa de América, X Quinientos, un pequeño poblado en el estado de Yucatán, México, aparece justo en medio del continente. Desde este punto de vista imaginario, la película narra la historia de personajes que viven en contextos radicalmente diferentes, pero que están unidos por su relación singular con la muerte y por su necesidad de transformarse para no ser consumidos por el duelo.
Alex, un adolescente afrocolombiano residente en Buenaventura, el puerto mas importante y mas peligroso de Colombia, tiene crear una versión imaginada de su vida como polizonte en el norte para justificar la muerte de su hermano y compañero de viaje. David, un muchacho Mazahua migra de su pueblo a la Ciudad de México pues no es capaz de enfrentar la muerte de su padre y se da cuenta de que su única opción para enfrentar la discriminación de la que son objeto los indígenas en el D.F. es adoptar la identidad Punk como coraza de protección. Aurora una mujer mayor de origen filipino que lleva 35 años viviendo en Montreal, se encuentra en la necesidad de cuidar a Peter, su nieto adolescente, quien llega a vivir con ella tras la muerte de su hija. Aurora debe entonces intentar adaptar su vida en la ciudad al imaginario que tiene Peter de Norteamérica, creado a partir de relatos de sus cartas, distorsionados por el anhelo y la distancia e incompatible con su realidad actual.
Entre Buenaventura, Ciudad de México y Montreal, las historias de Alex, David y Aurora se acercan y entablan un dialogo sin cruzarse jamás. Su conjunto explora tres maneras diferentes en las que los habitantes de América nos creamos auto representaciones de nosotros mismos, para protegernos de la muerte y acercarnos a como creemos que el otro quiere vernos. La conversación invisible de deseo y duelo con la que los habitantes de América nos hacemos eco unos a otros, es el tema de fondo y el hilo conductor de X Quinientos.
José de Los Santos (70) is in charge of the funeral rituals of his village inside the Pacific coastline. One day, the soul of his son announces him his own death and orders him to find his way to the origins. He goes on a journey into the jungle. In the midst of an eternal war, he must stay alive to reach his final resting place.

Un día, el alma de su hijo le anuncia su propia muerte y le ordena encontrar el camino hacia el origen. Se va de viaje a la selva. En medio de una guerra eterna, debe mantenerse con vida para llegar al lugar de su último descanso.

Un jour, l’esprit de son fils lui annonce l'imminence de sa propre mort et lui ordonne de trouver le chemin vers les origines. Il part alors en voyage dans la jungle. Pris dans une guerre sans fin, il doit survivre pour arriver au lieu de son ultime repos.
Inspired by true stories. Storylines develop in parallel around a rural village in Colombia; Luis, an aspiring musician who has had to return home, Leidy, a teenage guerrilla who at all costs avoids combat, and Jason, the foolhardy chief of police who plots an impossible defense against the imminent guerrilla attack while his men conspire to flee. These storylines intertwine when the attack occurs. The police take off, leaving the captain alone to defend the town. All seems lost, when something unusual happens: Luis’s music inspires the villagers to resist the attack vehemently, yet peacefully. This changes the rules of the game and sets off a chain of unprecedented events that will change their lives.
Inspirado en historias reales. Varias líneas narrativas se desarrollan en paralelo alrededor de un pueblo rural en Colombia; Luis, un músico frustrado que ha tenido que regresar a su casa, Leidy, una guerrillera joven que a toda costa evita el combate y Jason, un osado jefe de policía que arma una defensa imposible ante un ataque guerrillero inminente mientras sus hombres conspiran para huir. Estas líneas narrativas se entrecruzan cuando sucede el ataque. La policía huye, dejando al capitán solo. Todo parece perdido, pero sucede algo inusual: la música de Luis inspira al pueblo a resistir el ataque con vehemencia, pacíficamente. Esto cambia las reglas del juego y desencadena una serie de eventos sin precedentes que cambiarán sus vidas.
